WHAT TOMORROW BRINGS
AFGHANISTAN-UK/ DOCUMENTARY / 2015
“ A most intimate look at what it really
DIRECTOR: BETH MURPHY
What Tomorrow Brings follows one year in the life of the first all-girls school in
a remote, conservative Afghan village, where fathers have never before allowed their daughters to be educated. The film traces the stories of those who bring the school to life: students, teachers, village elders, parents, and school founder, humanitarian Razia Jan. While the girls learn to read and write, they come to understand the differences between the lives they were born into and the lives they dream of leading. Very much in the spirit of Malala Yousafzai who took on the Taliban by giving voice to her dreams – and although shot remains undaunted.
The film’s thought provoking themes will be discussed by the audience and the team from Project O, a Tasmanian based initiative helping young women develop new capabilities, learning how to become change-makers in their community.

COMMUNITY TAKES CHARGE
The fragmentation of the family unit, economic downturns
and increasing expectations of government to find solutions mean that the old paradigms of leadership are under pressure. Government is struggling to deliver services, fix problems and build communities in an environment of increased demands and constrained budgets. There is a loss of trust in politicians around the world and a swing to populism.
Community Takes Charge brings together a panel of community led change experts to discuss this phenomenon and to paint a picture of a future where community increasingly takes charge of those things that it is passionate about. The trailer for the inspiring film In the Shadow of the Hill regarding a community action in the favelas of Rio sets the scene.
