There’s a smell in here that’s gonna outlast religion.

-Kenny

Originally pitched as a spoof documentary, Kenny (BOFA 2016) is a film about the things we never talk about. Kenny (Shane Jacobson) is the man who makes sure the sewage never backs up at events, in businesses or when everybody else is having a good time not thinking about where their output is going. It has rightly garnered a niche following as one of the few Australian films that looks at the working class man without taking an easy mickey. As his father tells Kenny, he has disappointed his family by ending up as a “glorified turd-burglar” rather than a plumber; but he has pride in his work even though nobody ever wonders if they could do his job. But Kenny has ambition; to visit the Cleaners and Pumpers Convention in Nashville, Tennessee. There, he will be valued, appreciated and consulted about his unique antipodean approach to the flush. If you haven’t seen this film because you don’t like toilet humour – rethink now. It’s about a man trying his best to do his job, and if you don’t end up feeling sympathy for Kenny then you are not a true Australian. And it’s a perfect antidote to recent scenes of people fighting over toilet rolls at the supermarket!
