.. a Macedonian beekeeper’s conflict with her neighbours becomes a lyrical environmental fable.
-New York Times
A beguilingly lyrical journey through one season in the life of a honey collector from the wild hills of Macedonia. This film performs the astonishing feat of covering in intimate detail the life of Hatidze, an unsophisticated, traditional woman, and at the same time managing to maintain a respectful distance. This allows the viewer to become almost part of the undisturbed fabric of everyday mountain life. An absolute visual and emotional feast, this film won more awards at this year’s Sundance Festival than any other. “It tells the story of a place so strange that most of us can’t imagine it,” said the Hollywood reporter in its review. With almost documentary accuracy, the film tells how the pressures of modern life and technology – and brash newcomers to the village - are bumping up against the simple interdependence of humans, wild bees, and their gift of honey. Yet throughout the film, the pride of the honey gatherers in their craft shines sweetly through. If you miss any film this BOFA, make sure it isn’t Honeyland.
