A young boy grows up in regional France, fostered out from an early age and never able to establish solid family ties. But he knows he can be valued, be beautiful, be looked at, be famous – be, even, Miss France. Director Ruben Alves makes the most of this unusual scenario using a cast of delightful rogues and model Alexandre Wetter as Alexandra. He follows the challenges faced by Alexandra as he follows his dream – the suspicions, the class issues, the gender stereotyping, the ageism and sniping that the beauty pageant circus breeds. Wetter is simply stunning in the key role, both visually and as an actor, and his strength pulls the film away from the expected twee conclusions to offer an amusing yet thought-provoking look at the way society glibly portrays sections of the community as valuable, decorative, or just odd. A truly delightful experience.
