RUNNING TIME: 81 MINS
Inventive, off-beat, jaw-dropping
Taut, semi-erotic interplay. Controlled and socially constricted Icelanders. Gloved hands stroking fleshy flanks. Unexpected deaths and bloodied barbed wire. If this sounds like a noir Scandinavian thriller – well sorry, it isn’t. It’s a film about horses, love and nosey neighbours. The film follows Kolbeinn (Ingvar Sigurdsson) as he makes the decision to charm an attractive widow under the envious and pruriently puritanical noses of the local community, all while he trots about the parish on his favourite white mare. With a memorable soundtrack by David Thor Jonsson, Of Horses and Men (BOFA 2014) is in a class of its own; think music from Björk, eating rotten herring and multi-syllabic volcano names (Eyjafjallajökull). The shooting, editing and sparse dialogue plus a dry, dark Icelandic sense of humour results in a Nordic masterpiece. Spring is coming and the whole community – and you – are following the story. This cannot end well.
