OUR STORIES

In our 10th Anniversary festival we are proud to focus on Our Stories as Tasmanians and Australians. The festival has always been a community-run event and each year our volunteers are the friendly, helpful face of the festival. This year, Our Stories is supported by a proud Tasmanian, who believes in our people, our buildings and our community by valuing the past but welcoming the future.

WORLD STORIES

Since 1949 the Launceston Film Society (LFS) has been opening a window to the world for its film-loving members. Currently with 1,600 members it is one of the largest film societies in Australia and offers 40 new films each year from Australia and around the world to ” promote the opportunity for the viewing of films of merit, and to encourage interest in film as an art form”. LFS was the co-founder of the BOFA Film Festival in 2010 and has supported our Opening Night screening every year since then. Who better then to support BOFA in this innovative online response to the Coronavirus pandemic and, in so doing, to keep faith with the LFS members, who have been deprived of their weekly visit to view wonderful Stories of the World!

CLIMATE ACTION

The 2020 summer in Australia has mobilised the nation to stand up and demand action, Climate Action. Yes, we may be a small state in a small(ish) country but societies are the sum total of their parts. So, we need to do our part. Tasmania has much to be proud of due to our high level of renewable energy – hydro, wind and roof top solar. UPC Renewables is a major player here and on the mainland. They make the ideal partner for this year’s Climate Action films.

THE CHOICES WE MAKE

The Choices We Make is brought to you by McArthur Financial, a company whose expertise is in helping people make financial choices about their futures in an uncertain world. The Choices We Make is a new theme for BOFA 2020 and focuses on people who are between the proverbial “rock and a hard place” and the decisions they make. The consequences they face as a result can be both inspiring or challenging. You choose!

EAT AND DRINK

Fermentasmania is leading Tasmania’s role as the centre of excellence of artisanal breads, fine wines, flavoursome miso, great beer, delicious cheeses and refreshing kombucha. They have teamed up with BOFA Online this year to present Eat and Drink with fine films about baking, fermenting and wine making. And, although we sadly can’t have any actual tastings, we are organising an online discussion about the joys of making and using these wonderful products which are so much part of our foodie culture ! Enjoy.

CINEMATIC ART EXHIBITION

In the darkened cinema, screen culture has danced with art practice, making the gathered experience of seeing any movie transform into a motion picture gallery displaying the art of shared memories.
